Maintenance Tips for Countertops: How to Keep Yours Looking Brand New
Countertops are the centrepiece of your kitchen or bathroom—and one of the most-used surfaces in your home.
Whether you’ve just had new counters installed or want to extend the life of your existing ones, proper maintenance makes a big difference.
At Grosso Construction, we install everything from quartz, porcelain & butcher block to marble & granite. Here’s our professional advice on how to keep your countertops looking clean, durable, and beautiful for years to come.
General Tips for All Countertops
Regardless of the material, these universal rules apply:
Use a cutting board. Never cut directly on your counters—it dulls knives and can scratch or gouge the surface.
Wipe spills quickly. Prolonged moisture or acidic foods (like lemon or vinegar) can stain or etch.
Use a gentle cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive pads. Stick to microfiber cloths and pH-neutral cleaners.
Avoid direct heat. Always use a trivet or hot pad under pots, pans, and appliances.
Quartz Countertops
Quartz is durable, stain-resistant, and low-maintenance—but not invincible.
✅ Do:
Wipe daily with warm water and mild dish soap.
Use a soft cloth or sponge to avoid micro-scratches.
❌ Avoid:
Harsh chemicals like bleach or oven cleaners.
High heat—quartz can discolor or crack if exposed to hot pans.
Grosso Pro Tip: Even though quartz is non-porous, cleaning up coffee, wine, or oil spills right away helps avoid long-term dulling.
Granite & Marble Countertops
Natural stone adds an air of luxury and sophistication that’s hard to replicate with standard man-made alternatives. Each slab features unique veining and natural markings, making your countertop truly one of a kind. While we love using natural stone in custom kitchens and high-end builds, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind before investing your hard-earned dollars in a slab.
✅ Do:
Reseal your stone every 1–2 years to protect the finish (your contractor should advise who/what to use).
Clean with a safe cleaner or diluted dish soap
❌ Avoid:
Letting oil or wine sit on the surface—they can seep into unsealed stone.
Vinegar, citrus, or ammonia-based products—they eat away the sealant.
Grosso Pro Tip: Drop a few beads of water on the surface. If they absorb into the stone instead of beading, it’s time to reseal.
Butcher Block Countertops
Wood counters add warmth but need regular care to stay protected.
✅ Do:
Oil monthly with food-safe mineral oil or butcher block conditioner.
Sand and re-oil small scratches or stains as needed.
❌ Avoid:
Letting water or liquids pool—wood will warp or mold.
Harsh cleaners—just use diluted vinegar or mild soap.
Grosso Pro Tip: With proper care, butcher block counters can last decades and develop a beautiful patina. Don’t fear the patina!
